HODGES, NANCY LANDRY, MORENO, NORTON, SMITH, ST. GERMAIN,
STOKES, THIERRY, WHITNEY, AND WOODRUFF AND SENATORS

SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Thursday, May 22, 2014, as Girl Scouts of
the USA Day at the state capitol
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize Thursday, May 22, 2014, as "Girl Scouts of the United States of America Day"2
at the Louisiana State Capitol and the one hundred second anniversary of the3
founding of Girl Scouting.4
WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of the United States of America is the world's largest5
preeminent organization dedicated solely to all girls everywhere and to helping girls build6
character and gain skills for success in the real world; and7
WHEREAS, in 2013-2014, the Girl Scouts of Louisiana–Pines to the Gulf Council8
served almost eight thousand girls in six program levels; and9
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to honor the Girl Scouts' one hundred second10
anniversary and Juliette Gordon Lowe, who founded the Girl Scouts in 1912; and11
WHEREAS, since its founding on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette12
Gordon Lowe, Girl Scouts' membership has grown to nearly four million members13
throughout the United States and around the world; and14
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize and commend the Girl Scouts of15
Louisiana–Pines to the Gulf; and16
WHEREAS, through the Girl Scouts of the USA, girls can see the world and their17
place in it by learning the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal setting,18
the spirit of teamwork, and the thrill of accomplishment; and19 HLS 14RS-5380	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouting has welcomed girls1
and women from every background as members and has inspired them with courage,2
confidence, and character to make the world a better place; and3
WHEREAS, the Girl Scout program is based on leadership development, discovering4
a strong sense of self and positive values, connecting with others to build healthy5
relationships and advance diversity in a multicultural world, and taking action to meet6
community needs; and7
WHEREAS, through the guidance of trained adults, girls between the ages of five8
and seventeen are offered a variety of opportunities to explore numerous topics, including9
leadership, math, science, technology, health, fitness, sports, environmental education, the10
arts, and global awareness; and11
WHEREAS, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest national award in Girl12
Scouting, with national standards; it represents the time, leadership, creativity, and effort13
girls contribute to making their communities better; the young women who have earned the14
2014 Girl Scout Gold Award and will advance to become community leaders are Ashley15
Wright from Crowley, Louisiana, and Stephanie Warner from Shreveport, Louisiana; and16
WHEREAS, during the past one hundred two years, over fifty-five million American17
women have participated in Girl Scouting, and this enduring tradition continues to18
strengthen individual communities and our society as a whole.19
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby20
recognize Thursday, May 22, 2014, as "Girl Scouts of the United States of America Day"21
at the Louisiana State Capitol and the one hundred second anniversary of the founding of22
Girl Scouting, does hereby commend the organization for its many contributions and23
continued dedication to girls in the United States of America and around the world, and does24
hereby welcome members of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America as they visit25
the capitol on this special and memorable occasion.26
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives does hereby27
recognize and commend Girl Scouting of Louisiana–Pines to the Gulf.28 HLS 14RS-5380	ORIGINAL

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted1
to the Girl Scouts of the United States of America and to Girl Scouts of Louisiana–Pines to2
the Gulf.3
