HLS 14RS-1251 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 19 BY REPRESENTATIVE LEGER SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes April of 2014 as End Distracted Driving Awareness Month A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To recognize April of 2014 as End Distracted Driving Awareness Month in the state of2 Louisiana.3 WHEREAS, the End Distracting Driving (EndDD) Student Awareness Initiative was4 started by Joel Feldman and his wife Dianne Anderson, founders of the Casey Feldman5 Memorial Foundation, in an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and6 to emphasize the importance of focusing full attention on driving safely; and7 WHEREAS, Joel Feldman dedicated himself to this cause to honor the memory of8 his late daughter Casey Feldman, a 21-year-old, award-winning student journalist who was9 a senior at Fordham University in New York City when she was killed by a distracted10 motorist on July 17, 2009; and11 WHEREAS, distracted driving kills more than 3,300 people and injures nearly12 400,000 more each year; EndDD has actively targeted audiences such as students with its13 Student Awareness Initiative geared to educate and inform drivers about the safety crisis14 related to distracted driving, its costs, implications, and often fatal consequences; and15 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Association for Justice attorney members are joining16 more than 850 attorneys, judges, and safety advocates from the United States and Canada,17 in pledging to give safety presentations on distracted driving to local high schools,18 community groups, and civic organizations, with a goal to reach more than 100,000 drivers19 and potential drivers each year; and20 HLS 14RS-1251 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 19 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the Legislature of Louisiana commends the commitment and1 accomplishments of the EndDD awareness and educational campaigns initiated by Joel2 Feldman and his wife, Dianne Anderson, as well as efforts by the Louisiana Association for3 Justice, to bring this campaign to our local schools and communities, as the state strives to4 make its roads safer for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians; and5 WHEREAS, it is proper for the Legislature of Louisiana to commend Joel Feldman6 and his wife, Dianne Anderson, as well as the Louisiana Association for Justice, for their7 efforts to bring the EndDD Student Awareness Initiative to the state's local schools and8 communities, as Louisiana strives to make its roads safer for drivers, passengers, and9 pedestrians.10 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana recognizes the11 month of April 2014 as "End Distracted Driving Awareness Month" and encourages all12 citizens of the state to educate and inform drivers about the perils of distracted driving.13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby14 commend Joel Feldman, Dianne Anderson, and the Louisiana Association for Justice for15 their efforts to improve highway safety.16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Joel17 Feldman and his wife, Dianne Anderson, and the Louisiana Association for Justice.18 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
