HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 202
BY REPRESENTATIVES BERTHELOT, LAMBERT, PRICE, AND SCHEXNAYDER
AND SENATORS AMEDEE AND BROWN
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend Sergeant Chad Stafford of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office for his heroic
rescue of a two-year-old boy from drowning.
WHEREAS, Sergeant Chad Stafford is a veteran of more than fifteen years of the
Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, as well as a native and resident of Gonzales; and
WHEREAS, one of the missions of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office is to protect
life; and
WHEREAS, on May 13, 2014, Sergeant Stafford was in the performance of his
duties as a civil process server with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office when he heard a
child screaming at a pond on the grounds of the Mansions of Ivy Lakes apartment complex
in Gonzales; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Stafford immediately ran to the bank of the pond and saw a
two-year-old boy going under the water at the other end of the pond; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Stafford ran along the bank of the pond and then jumped into
the water and swam to the child; and
WHEREAS, when Sergeant Stafford arrived at the child only the child's feet were
above water; and
WHEREAS, the water at that location was over Sergeant Stafford's head; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Stafford pulled the child's head out of the water and swam to
the bank of the pond with the child; and
WHEREAS, due to the prompt action of Sergeant Stafford, the child sustained no
injuries from the near drowning; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Stafford should be commended for his selfless actions in
saving the life of a child. ENROLLEDHCR NO. 202

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend the actions of Sergeant Chad Stafford in performing his duties as an Ascension
Parish Sheriff's deputy to the highest standards and does hereby record for posterity his
exemplary response to an emergency which resulted in a life-saving rescue.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that suitable copies of this Resolution be transmitted
to Sergeant Chad Stafford and Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley.
