HLS 14RS-6083 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 215 BY REPRESENTATIVE LEGER AND SENATOR PETERSON SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Commends the Xavier University's women's tennis team for an outstanding season and proclaims Monday, June 2, 2014, as Xavier Gold Nuggets Day A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend the Xavier University women's tennis team for an outstanding season and2 proclaim Monday, June 2, 2014, as Xavier Gold Nuggets Day.3 WHEREAS, the Xavier University women's tennis team finished the season with an4 exceptional overall record of 17 - 7 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference in 2014 and is the5 only program in the history of the university to reach the National Association of6 Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national semifinals; and7 WHEREAS, the Gold Nuggets were number one in the NAIA coaches poll three8 times in 2013 and twice in 2014 and were number three in the 2014 NAIA Women's Tennis9 Coaches' Postseason Top 25 Poll; and10 WHEREAS, the Xavier University women's tennis team was ranked in the top11 twenty-five for the third consecutive year and the ninth time in ten seasons, and eight of the12 last ten women's tennis teams have qualified for the NAIA National Championship; and13 WHEREAS, the members of the Xavier University women's tennis team include14 Nour Abbes, Vashni Balleste, Amber Brown, Sha'Nel Bruins, Simone-Alyse Ewell, Brion15 Flowers, Jordyn Goody, Dasia Harris, Kourtney Howell, Brandi Nelson, and Carmen16 Nelson; and17 WHEREAS, in addition to the team ranking, the Gold Nuggets had three ranked18 singles players: Nour Abbes ended a sensational season with a 17 - 0 record in singles, was19 the winner of the 2014 Marvin P. Richmond Outstanding Player Award, and was ranked20 HLS 14RS-6083 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 215 Page 2 of 2 second; Kourtney Howell, a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-1 American, was ranked sixteenth; and Brion Flowers, an ITA All-American, was ranked2 twenty-seventh; and3 WHEREAS, the doubles team of Kourtney Howell and Brion Flowers was ranked4 fifth, and sophomore Simone-Alyse Ewell finished the season at 21 - 3 in doubles, 19 - 05 in her final twenty matches; and6 WHEREAS, these team members performed at the highest level of excellence7 throughout the 2014 season and playoffs, and each of these young ladies deserves8 recognition for her vital contributions to the winning effort; and9 WHEREAS, the amazing accomplishments of the team could not have been achieved10 without the guidance and skills of Head Tennis Coach Alan Green; and11 WHEREAS, through its display of good sportsmanship and dedication to excellence,12 the Xavier university women's tennis team has brought a tremendous sense of honor and13 pride to its school and community and upholds the glorious tradition of the Gold Nuggets.14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby15 commend the Xavier University women's tennis team upon the completion of an outstanding16 season, does hereby congratulate the players, coaches, and everyone involved with this fine17 tennis program as they celebrate their exceptional season and prepare for continued success18 in the future.19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana also proclaims20 Monday, June 2, 2014, as Xavier Gold Nuggets Day.21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted22 to Head Tennis Coach Alan Green and the Xavier University women's tennis team.23 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
