BY REPRESENTATIVE KLECKLEY AND SENATOR ALARIO
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Provides for observance of Former State Legislator
Recognition Day during the third week of the regular session every even-numbered
year
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize the extraordinary men and women who have served in the Louisiana2
Legislature and to provide for the observance of "Former State Legislator3
Recognition Day" during the third week of each regular session of the legislature in4
even-numbered years.5
WHEREAS, among those who serve in public office, the work of a legislator is quite6
unique; for a legislator has many roles, as policymaker and lawmaker, as ombudsman7
obtaining services for constituents, and as overseer of the implementation of laws; and8
WHEREAS, those who have experienced this unique governmental role comprise9
a special band of brothers and sisters who are alone in their knowledge and understanding10
of the time, the effort, the concerns, and the sacrifices that constitute the true nature of11
legislative office; and12
WHEREAS, legislators who have served in prior terms of office have been13
responsible for maintaining and enhancing the effectiveness of the legislative process over14
the years, for assuring the fairness, efficiency, and openness of the process, and they have15
also been innovators in solving state problems and resourceful in bringing knowledge and16
expertise to bear on the formation of public policy; and17
WHEREAS, the predecessors of today's representatives and senators have willingly18
shared their wisdom and knowledge with newly elected members, becoming their mentors,19 HLS 14RS-5619	ORIGINAL

colleagues, and friends, and many of these men and women have gone on to continue serving1
the public in other capacities; and2
WHEREAS, it is appropriate for legislators serving today to establish a forum to3
compare notes with former legislators about their common experience in a spirit of4
camaraderie and fellowship and to profit by the wise counsel of those who in earlier years5
walked the halls of this capitol, debated in committees, and struggled with the same kinds6
of decisions legislators face today; and7
WHEREAS, the legislature recognizes and honors many different groups and8
constituencies from around our state during every session, and it is only fitting and proper9
that the legislature provide for the recognition of the men and women who have served as10
legislators in prior terms of office, for the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of11
our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon12
people like these men and women who have dedicated their time, energy, knowledge, and13
experience as lawmakers and public servants.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby15
recognize the extraordinary men and women who have served in the Louisiana Legislature16
and does provide for the observance of "Former State Legislator Recognition Day" during17
the third week of each regular session of the legislature in even-numbered years.18
