HLS 14RS-1857 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 27 BY REPRESENTATIVES NANCY LANDRY, CHAMPAGNE, AND HENSGENS AND SENATOR PERRY COMMENDATIONS: Commends Barbara Landry Picard on her long and distinguished career of service to the village of Maurice and Vermilion Parish A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend Barbara Landry Picard for her many years of dedicated and distinguished2 public service to the village of Maurice and Vermilion Parish.3 WHEREAS, the heart of Barbara Picard has always been filled with loyalty, duty,4 and service toward her friends and neighbors in her small community of the village of5 Maurice; and6 WHEREAS, after being appointed on December 10, 1975, by the mayor and board7 of aldermen of the village of Maurice to fill a vacancy on the board, Barbara Picard8 determined that the best way to serve her community was in political office; she campaigned9 for and was elected to the office of alderman in the village of Maurice on March 12, 1976,10 becoming the first woman elected as an alderman in Maurice; and11 WHEREAS, her service as an alderman prompted her to seek a higher office from12 which she could do more for her constituents; her successful campaign for the office of13 mayor led to her election in May 1982, the first woman to be elected to the position in the14 village of Maurice; and15 WHEREAS, Barbara Picard governed the village of Maurice so well that she was16 elected to five successive terms; in all, she served from 1982 to 2006, completing twenty-17 four years as mayor; and18 HLS 14RS-1857 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 27 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the leadership qualities and skills in governance displayed by Barbara1 Picard have been an inspiration to aspiring leaders in Vermilion Parish, and it is appropriate2 to herald her many years of public service.3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the4 Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Barbara Landry Picard for her years of5 service to the village of Maurice and Vermilion Parish and does hereby express its collective6 thanks to Ms. Picard for the positive imprint her career in politics has made upon the fabric7 of Louisiana.8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted9 to Barbara Landry Picard.10 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
