Komen for the Cure and its La. affiliates A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana affiliates for improving the2 quality of life in local communities through the delivery of breast cancer education,3 screening, treatment, and research, and to recognize Tuesday, April 29, 2014, as4 Komen for the Cure Day at the Legislature of Louisiana.5 WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network6 of breast cancer survivors and advocates fighting together to save lives, empower people,7 ensure quality care for all, and energize science to find breast cancer cures; and8 WHEREAS, except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed9 cancer in women in the United States; and10 WHEREAS, among the fifty states, Louisiana had the highest rate of breast cancer11 mortality in 2013, despite the fact that the breast cancer incidence rate in Louisiana is lower12 than the national average; and13 WHEREAS, this year in Louisiana, it is estimated that over three thousand new cases14 of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women, and over six hundred Louisiana women will15 die of the disease, many of them facing a late-stage diagnosis involving fewer treatment16 options and lower chances of survival; and17 WHEREAS, Louisiana has the fourth highest uninsured rate in the United States and,18 as a consequence, many women choose to delay or completely forego the breast cancer19 screenings that are a key to surviving this disease; and20 HLS 14RS-1854 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 32 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana affiliates honor their1 mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever by advocating to preserve full state2 funding and matching federal funding to the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program;3 full funding of the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program will ensure that the4 program continues to provide breast cancer early detection services to women in the state;5 and6 WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure continues its mission locally, nationally,7 and globally to identify the cures that will end breast cancer as a life-threatening disease and8 to provide community-based support to the women and men who are fighting breast cancer9 today, including those in the state of Louisiana.10 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby11 commend Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana affiliates for their unwavering12 dedication to fight against breast cancer and does hereby recognize Tuesday, April 29, 2014,13 as Susan G.
