HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 64
BY REPRESENTATIVE BURRELL
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Dr. Andrew Chesson, Jr., dean of the School of
Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport, upon his retirement
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend Andrew L. Chesson, Jr., M.D., for his exemplary years of service to Louisiana2
State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport (LSU HSC-Shreveport) as a3
physician, professor, and administrator upon his retirement as dean of the School of4
Medicine.5
WHEREAS, Andrew Chesson, Jr., joined  LSU HSC-Shreveport upon completing6
his residency in neurology in 1978; and7
WHEREAS, as a nationally recognized expert in sleep medicine, Dr. Chesson8
developed and became the director of the LSU HSC-Shreveport Sleep Disorder Center, the9
first center of its kind in Louisiana and the state's longest continuously certified sleep10
disorder center; it is a model for sleep disorder centers nationwide; and11
WHEREAS, Dr. Chesson's work in the discipline of sleep medicine helped to12
establish national standards of practice and fellowship training; he was the director of the13
Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at LSU HSC-Shreveport; and 14
WHEREAS, as a founding member of the Louisiana Sleep Society, Dr. Chesson was15
president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and in 2007, he received the16
academy's Distinguished Service Award; and17
WHEREAS, throughout his medical career, Dr. Chesson has been named to local and18
national Best Doctors lists and he received the Humanism in Medicine Award from the19
Association of Academic Medical Centers and Pfizer; and20 HLS 14RS-2793	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, in addition to teaching and treating patients, Dr. Chesson admirably1
served in several administrative roles at the LSU HSC-Shreveport School of Medicine,2
including fifteen years as the associate dean for academic affairs; he was acting chancellor3
and dean for one year before becoming dean of the School of Medicine in 2009; and4
WHEREAS, during Dr. Chesson's tenure, he led the school's accreditation process5
and led a significant restructuring of the medical school curriculum; and6
WHEREAS, the LSU HSC-Shreveport School of Medicine developed a nationally7
credentialed simulation center for medical training under Dr. Chesson's leadership; and8
WHEREAS, over his thirty-five year career at the LSU HSC-Shreveport, Dr.9
Chesson was instrumental in the growth and excellence of its academic and clinical10
missions, and his national recognition in the field of sleep medicine has brought distinction11
to the LSU HSC-Shreveport campus; and12
WHEREAS, on March 21, 2014, Dr. Chesson was granted the titles of professor13
emeritus and dean emeritus by the LSU Board of Supervisors, and upon the occasion of his14
retirement, it is appropriate to commend his many years of dedicated service to the LSU15
HSC-Shreveport School of Medicine.16
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby17
express their deep appreciation to Andrew L. Chesson, Jr., M.D., as he leaves a remarkable18
legacy of leadership of the LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport School of Medicine and19
enters the next phase of his life, and does hereby wish him many happy years of retirement.20
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted21
to Dr. Andrew L. Chesson, Jr.22
