HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 64
BY REPRESENTATIVE BURRELL AND SENATOR PEACOCK
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend Andrew L. Chesson, Jr., M.D., for his exemplary years of service to Louisiana
State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport (LSU HSC-Shreveport) as a
physician, professor, and administrator upon his retirement as dean of the School of
Medicine.
WHEREAS, Andrew Chesson, Jr., joined LSU HSC-Shreveport upon completing
his residency in neurology in 1978; and
WHEREAS, as a nationally recognized expert in sleep medicine, Dr. Chesson
developed and became the director of the LSU HSC-Shreveport Sleep Disorder Center, the
first center of its kind in Louisiana and the state's longest continuously certified sleep
disorder center; it is a model for sleep disorder centers nationwide; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Chesson's work in the discipline of sleep medicine helped to
establish national standards of practice and fellowship training; he was the director of the
Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at LSU HSC-Shreveport; and 
WHEREAS, as a founding member of the Louisiana Sleep Society, Dr. Chesson was
president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and in 2007, he received the
academy's Distinguished Service Award; and
WHEREAS, throughout his medical career, Dr. Chesson has been named to local and
national Best Doctors lists and he received the Humanism in Medicine Award from the
Association of Academic Medical Centers and Pfizer; and
WHEREAS, in addition to teaching and treating patients, Dr. Chesson admirably
served in several administrative roles at the LSU HSC-Shreveport School of Medicine,
including fifteen years as the associate dean for academic affairs; he was acting chancellor
and dean for one year before becoming dean of the School of Medicine in 2009; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 64

WHEREAS, during Dr. Chesson's tenure, he led the school's accreditation process
and led a significant restructuring of the medical school curriculum; and
WHEREAS, the LSU HSC-Shreveport School of Medicine developed a nationally
credentialed simulation center for medical training under Dr. Chesson's leadership; and
WHEREAS, over his thirty-five year career at the LSU HSC-Shreveport, Dr.
Chesson was instrumental in the growth and excellence of its academic and clinical
missions, and his national recognition in the field of sleep medicine has brought distinction
to the LSU HSC-Shreveport campus; and
WHEREAS, on March 21, 2014, Dr. Chesson was granted the titles of professor
emeritus and dean emeritus by the LSU Board of Supervisors, and upon the occasion of his
retirement, it is appropriate to commend his many years of dedicated service to the LSU
HSC-Shreveport School of Medicine.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express their deep appreciation to Andrew L. Chesson, Jr., M.D., as he leaves a remarkable
legacy of leadership of the LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport School of Medicine and
enters the next phase of his life, and does hereby wish him many happy years of retirement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Dr. Andrew L. Chesson, Jr.
