HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 87
BY REPRESENTATIVE JAMES
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Wednesday, April 23, 2014, as Alzheimer's
Awareness Day at the state capitol and commends the Louisiana chapter of the
Alzheimer's Association
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend the Louisiana chapter of the Alzheimer's Association for its efforts in2
Louisiana to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research,3
provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and reduce the risk of4
dementia through the promotion of brain health, and to recognize Wednesday, April5
23, 2014, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the state capitol.6
WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease is a slow, progressive disorder of the brain that7
results in loss of memory and other cognitive function and, eventually, death; and8
WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United9
States and currently affects an estimated five million Americans; and10
WHEREAS, more than five hundred thousand seniors die each year because they11
have Alzheimer's disease; and12
WHEREAS, in Louisiana alone it is estimated that more than ninety-two thousand13
people have Alzheimer’s disease; and14
WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease takes an enormous toll on family members, with15
an estimated two hundred twenty-eight thousand people in Louisiana acting as caregivers16
for individuals with the disease; and17
WHEREAS, caregivers for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease suffer from18
increased levels of stress and depression that differ from those of caregivers who deal with19
other illnesses and that can create health problems unique to those caregivers; and20 HCR NO. 87

WHEREAS, the Alzheimer’s Association works on a global, national, and local level1
to enhance care and support for all those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other2
dementias; and3
WHEREAS, as the largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's disease research, the4
Alzheimer's Association is committed to accelerating progress of new treatments,5
preventions, and ultimately, a cure; and6
WHEREAS, through its partnerships and funded projects, the Alzheimer's7
Association has been part of every major research advancement over the past thirty years;8
and 9
WHEREAS, although there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s  disease, new10
treatments are on the horizon as a result of accelerating insight into the biology of the11
disease; and12
WHEREAS, research has also shown that effective care and support can improve13
quality of life for individuals and their caregivers over the course of the disease from14
diagnosis to the end of life; and 15
WHEREAS, recent advancements in scientific research have demonstrated the16
benefits of early medical treatment for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as the17
benefits of early access to counseling and other support services for their caregivers; and18
WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association is a leading voice for Alzheimer's disease19
advocacy, fighting for critical Alzheimer's research, prevention, and care initiatives at the20
state and federal level, and working diligently to make Alzheimer’s a national priority; and21
WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association is committed to the eradication of22
Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia through the advancement of research,23
committed to providing and enhancing care and support of all affected, and committed to24
reducing the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.25
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby26
commend the Louisiana chapter of the Alzheimer's Association for its efforts in Louisiana27
to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, provide and enhance28
care and support for all affected, and reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of29 HCR NO. 87

brain health, and to recognize Wednesday, April 23, 2014, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day1
at the state capitol.2
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted3
to the Louisiana chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.4
