SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Wednesday, April 30, 2014, as Plaquemines
Parish Day at the state capitol
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Wednesday, April 30, 2014, as Plaquemines Parish Day at the state capitol.2
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is home to more than twenty-three thousand3
residents and is the site of many historic events and serves an important role in the oil and4
trade industries; and 5
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is the parish with the most combined land and water6
area in Louisiana and is located along the last seventy miles of the Mississippi River; and7
WHEREAS, the parish became known as Plaquemines after the French name for8
their military post, "piakimin", which means persimmon, rightfully named because of the9
numerous persimmon trees near the post; and10
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish was the first place in the United States where11
shippers used a container for cargo in foreign trade; and12
WHEREAS, Fort Jackson is a major historical site in the parish, dating back to 182213
and built pursuant to a recommendation from General Andrew Jackson; the fort was used14
during the Civil War and was used as a training base for troops during World War I; and15
WHEREAS, Woodland Plantation, an antebellum mansion in Plaquemines Parish,16
serves as a bed and breakfast and is depicted on the label for Southern Comfort whiskey; and17
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish has significant seafood and citrus industries and is18
the largest crude oil producing parish in Louisiana; the parish is also home to Plaquemines19

WHEREAS, while the parish may be prone to flooding because of its location along1
the Mississippi River, its people are resilient and loyal.2
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the3
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 30, 2014, as Plaquemines4
Parish Day at the state capitol.5
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted6
to Billy Nungesser, Plaquemines Parish President.7
