BY REPRESENTATIVES SMITH AND KATRINA JACKSON
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Tuesday, April 29, 2014, as AKA Day at the
state capitol
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Tuesday, April 29, 2014, as AKA Day at the state capitol and to commend the2
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.3
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha4
Sorority, Incorporated, for their outstanding community service and to recognize Tuesday,5
April 29, 2014, as AKA Day at the state capitol; and6
WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, Alpha7
Kappa Alpha Sorority has the distinction of being the first sorority established by African-8
American college women; and9
WHEREAS, throughout the past one hundred six years, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority10
has expanded internationally to more than eight hundred fifty chapters; and11
WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty-one of these chapters, which are12
located on college and university campuses and have active alumnae groups in communities13
throughout the state; and14
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is committed to community service and15
actively contributes to the educational, civic, and social life of Louisiana's citizens; and16
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters encourage their members to become17
involved and committed community volunteers in one of their primary service components,18
including education, health, the economy, the arts, and the family; and19
WHEREAS, state representatives Katrina Jackson and Patricia Haynes Smith are20

WHEREAS, the current program of AKA is "Global Leadership Through Timeless1
Service"; and2
WHEREAS, AKA Day at the state capitol is a national program through which3
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority throughout the nation meet with their legislators4
to address issues that are pertinent to their communities. 5
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the6
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, April 29, 2014, as AKA Day at the7
Louisiana State Capitol and does hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the8
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for the tremendous honor and pride9
that they bring to their families, friends, communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United10
States of America.11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted12
to Carolyn House Stewart, Esq., the international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,13
Incorporated.14
