HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 126

A RESOLUTION1
To commend the L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker Career College and Preparatory High School2
boys' basketball team for winning the 2014 Class 4A state championship.3
WHEREAS, in August 2013, two high schools, L.B. Landry and O. Perry Walker,4
successfully combined at a state-of-the-art facility in Algiers to form the L.B. Landry-5
O. Perry Walker College and Career Preparatory High School, despite a coalition of anti-6
merger activists who wanted to "let Landry stay Landry, and let Walker stay Walker"; and7
WHEREAS, the merger of these schools faced the unique challenges of combining8
coaching staffs and teams of athletes who, prior to the 2013-2014 school year, had been9
opponents; and10
WHEREAS, in stellar fashion, the Landry-Walker boys' basketball team completed11
its first regular season with a record of 35-5, which punched the team's ticket to the12
Louisiana High School Athletic Association Top 28 Boys Basketball Tournament; and13
WHEREAS, in the semifinals, the Landry-Walker Charging Buccaneers defeated the14
reigning Class 4A state champions, St. Thomas More, by a score of 62-50, a preview of its15
seemingly easy path to the top of Class 4A; and16
WHEREAS, the team showed the unstoppable unity it had built in its first year by17
handily knocking off the East Jefferson High School Warriors by a score of 76-56 to become18
the new Class 4A state champions; and19
WHEREAS, Landry-Walker guard Tyree Griffin was named the game's Most20
Outstanding Player, finishing with fifteen points, six assists, and four rebounds; and21

eight of eight free throws and four of four attempted shots from the field, including two23
