CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the deaths of hundreds of miners as a result
of a coal mine explosion in the town of Soma in western Turkey
A RESOLUTION1
To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the deaths of hundreds of2
miners in a coal mine explosion in Soma, Turkey.3
WHEREAS, on Tuesday, May 14, 2014, an explosion tore through a coal mine in4
Soma, Turkey, as more than seven hundred workers prepared for a shift change, and the5
ensuing fire cut off electricity to the mine, trapping hundreds almost a mile beneath the6
surface; and7
WHEREAS, although three hundred eighty-three miners had been rescued by the day8
after the explosion, three hundred one deaths have been confirmed, making the Soma mine9
explosion the most deadly in Turkey's mining history; and10
WHEREAS, tragedies of this magnitude transcend geographical boundaries, and it11
is with great sadness for the loved ones of the deceased and injured miners that the House12
of Representatives expresses sincere condolences.13
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the14
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends15
of miners who died in the Soma, Turkey, explosion and does hereby share in the hopes that16
