HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 163

COMMENDATIONS: Commends the La. Crawfish Promotion and Research Board for its
contributions to the education of the children of the state
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board for its contributions2
to the education of the children of Louisiana.3
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board was created in4
1983 by the legislature to provide a voluntary method of raising revenues to be used for the5
purpose of developing markets for crawfish and for funding research to further the Louisiana6
crawfish industry; and7
WHEREAS, the combined annual crawfish yield in Louisiana ranges from one8
hundred twenty million to one hundred fifty million pounds, an impact on the state's9
economy of more than three hundred million dollars each year that provides direct and10
indirect employment in the crawfish industry for more than seven thousand persons; and11
WHEREAS, in addition to performing its official duties over the past three decades,12
the board has made the children of Louisiana a priority and makes special efforts on behalf13
of their education; and14
WHEREAS, the board financed the printing and binding of more than one hundred15
books, housed in the Louisiana section of the Louisiana State Library, all of which were16
written and illustrated by Louisiana students, and paid for many of them to be placed online17
where they are free and accessible by the public; and18
WHEREAS, there are comprehensive questions at the end of each book for teachers19
to use for assessment, and the books are being enjoyed in schools throughout Louisiana; and20 HLS 14RS-5155 ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, the board has sponsored and financed performances promoting literacy1
throughout Louisiana and children's literacy tents at festivals held by organizations such as2
Louisiana Public Broadcasting and Loyola University upon its centennial celebration; and3
WHEREAS, the board also financed the publication and printing of approximately4
fourteen thousand free coloring books promoting both the state and literacy, which are given5
to children after touring the Louisiana State Museum; and6
WHEREAS, in addition, the board is financing and distributing the Crawfish Tales7
book series; elementary school libraries in approximately thirty parishes have received these8
books, and the board's goal is to place the book series in every elementary school library in9
every parish; and10
WHEREAS, the contribution of a portion of every dollar spent purchasing Louisiana11
crawfish goes toward the education of Louisiana's children, which clearly demonstrates how12
truly committed the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board is to the state's13
young people; and14
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board merits a special15
measure of commendation for its dedication to the students of Louisiana.16
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the17
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and18
Research Board for its contributions to the education of the children of Louisiana.19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted20
to the chairperson of the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board.21
