HLS 14RS-5735 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 168 BY REPRESENTATIVE HUNTER SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Thursday, May 29, 2014, as Omega Day at the state capitol A RESOLUTION1 To recognize Thursday, May 29, 2014, as Omega Psi Phi Day at the Louisiana State Capitol2 and to commend Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.3 WHEREAS, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, was founded on November 17,4 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by Professor Ernest E. Just and three5 undergraduate students, Edgar A. Love, Frank Coleman, and Oscar J. Cooper; and6 WHEREAS, the fraternity's name was derived from the initials of a Greek phrase7 meaning "friendship is essential to the soul"; and8 WHEREAS, manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift are the cardinal9 principles of the fraternity; and10 WHEREAS, Omega Psi Phi was the first black national fraternal organization to be11 founded at a historically black college; and12 WHEREAS, notable Omega men include Bill Cosby, Michael Jordan, Carter G.13 Woodson, and Vernon Jordan; and14 WHEREAS, for decades, members of this fraternity have been involved in the fight15 for social justice, from participating in sit-ins and other demonstrations to taking part in the16 activities of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and17 WHEREAS, Omega Psi Phi has instituted numerous programs within its chapters to18 further its principles, including voter registration, education, and mobilization; and19 WHEREAS, among its many social action beneficiaries are Assault on Illiteracy,20 Habitat for Humanity, and the American Diabetes Association; and21 HLS 14RS-5735 ORIGINAL HR NO. 168 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the members of this respected fraternity work and volunteer to better1 their communities, and through their activities they have earned widespread respect as2 individuals and as a fraternity.3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby4 recognize Thursday, May 29, 2014, as Omega Psi Phi Day at the Louisiana State Capitol,5 does hereby commend the members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, for their6 many accomplishments and contributions, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for7 the tremendous honor and pride that this wonderful organization brings to its community,8 state, and nation.9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted10 to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.11 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
