HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 187
BY REPRESENTATIVE COX
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Shane Reynolds upon his induction into the Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Shane Reynolds upon his induction into the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of2
Fame in June and to congratulate him on an outstanding career as a Major League3
Baseball  pitcher.4
WHEREAS, a native of Bastrop, Louisiana, Shane Reynolds was born on Tuesday,5
March 26, 1968; and6
WHEREAS, Mr. Reynolds graduated from Ouachita Christian School in 1986 and7
spent time at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, before finishing his college8
career at the University of Texas; and9
WHEREAS,  Mr. Reynolds began his successful career when he was drafted in the10
third round of the 1989 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Houston Astros; and11
WHEREAS, Shane Reynolds was twenty-four years old when he broke into the big12
leagues on July 20, 1992, with the Houston Astros, where he remained until 2002; and13
WHEREAS, in 1998 and 1999, Mr. Reynolds led the National League with over14
thirty-five starts in each season; and15
WHEREAS, Mr. Reynolds won ten or more games six times in his career, with his16
best season coming in 1998 when he was nineteen wins and eight losses with a 3.51 earned17
run average and two hundred nine strikeouts; and18
WHEREAS, Mr. Reynolds won sixteen games in 1996 and 1999 and finished in the19
top ten in strikeouts five times between 1994 and 1999; and20 HLS 14RS-4911	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, in 2000, Mr. Reynolds pitched an exceptional one hundred three wins1
and eighty-six losses season, earning him a position in the all-star game; and2
WHEREAS, besides being an exceptional pitcher, Mr. Reynolds was talented as a3
batter, posting a .141 career average with five home runs; and4
WHEREAS, after leaving the Astros, Mr. Reynolds played with the Atlanta Braves5
in 2003 and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004; and6
WHEREAS, with his outstanding talent and gifted pitching arm,  Mr. Reynolds7
earned several opening day starts throughout his impressive career, pitching thirteen seasons8
in the Major League with a one hundred fourteen wins and ninety-six losses career record;9
and10
WHEREAS, longtime Astros trainer, Dr. Gene Coleman, compared Mr. Reynolds'11
work ethic to that of Nolan Ryan; and12
WHEREAS, because of the pride that Mr. Reynolds brings to his alma mater,13
Ouachita Christian School, and his remarkable career in the Major League, on Thursday,14
April 24, Ouachita Christian School Baseball honored him by retiring his number, 37; and15
WHEREAS, Shane Reynolds' phenomenal and successful career as a professional16
pitcher and his induction into the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame bring great pride to17
the people of Louisiana who are honored to have him as a native son.18
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the19
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Shane Reynolds on his20
induction into the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and on his long and memorable21
career as a Major League Baseball pitcher.22
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted23
to Shane Reynolds.24
