HLS 14RS-4913 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 189 BY REPRESENTATIVE COX COMMENDATIONS: Commends Venus Lacy upon her induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame A RESOLUTION1 To commend Venus Lacy, acclaimed Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters basketball star center,2 upon the occasion of her induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.3 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1958 and was4 intended, in the words of Otis Harris, sports editor of the Shreveport Journal, to be "the5 Louisiana Hall of Fame – a hall of fame for the state's greatest athletes, men or women,6 amateur or professional, living or dead"; and7 WHEREAS, on June 21, 2014, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, eight all-time greats are8 officially joining the ranks of Louisiana sports legends; and9 WHEREAS, among the remarkable class of honorees to be inducted into the10 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is Venus Lacy, one of the all-time great members of the Lady11 Techsters basketball team, and a woman who truly meets the standard for the Hall of Fame12 advanced in 1950 that still abides today, for Venus Lacy is surely one of the state's greatest13 athletes; and14 WHEREAS, a star center for the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters basketball team15 from 1988 until 1990, Lacy was twice named as the Player of the Year for both the16 American South Conference and the state of Louisiana; and17 WHEREAS, Lacy started as center on Louisiana Tech's 1988 national championship18 team, the last Techster's team to capture a National Collegiate Athletic Association title; and19 WHEREAS, following a senior season that saw her average twenty-four and two20 tenths points and twelve and seven tenths rebounds per game, in 1990, Lacy was named a21 HLS 14RS-4913 ORIGINAL HR NO. 189 Page 2 of 2 Kodak All-American and the United States Basketball Writers Association Champion1 National Player of the Year; and2 WHEREAS, Lacy finished her Louisiana Tech career with two thousand four points3 - fourth highest in program history - and is the only Louisiana Tech player to ever average4 twenty points per game in a career; and5 WHEREAS, in addition to being a star member of the Lady Techsters national6 championship team, Lacy was a star member of the 1996 United States Olympic women's7 basketball team that captured the gold for the United States; and8 WHEREAS, prior to retiring from basketball in 1998, Lacy played in the former9 American Basketball League, Europe, and spent two years with the New York Liberty of the10 Women's National Basketball Association; and11 WHEREAS, the House of Representatives wishes to recognize Venus Lacy for her12 peerless athletic career and for her well-deserved induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall13 of Fame, for she is truly one of Louisiana's greatest athletes.14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the15 Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Venus Lacy, illustrious Louisiana Tech Lady16 Techsters star center, upon the occasion of her induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of17 Fame.18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted19 to Venus Lacy.20 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
