SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates the month of May as Sonja and Jonathan
Anderson Water Safety Month in Louisiana
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize May of 2014 as Sonja and Jonathan Anderson Water Safety Month in the state2
of Louisiana.3
WHEREAS, Sonja and Jonathan Anderson, the wife and son of Johnny Anderson,4
a prominent political figure in north Baton Rouge, both died in May of 2010, from drowning5
in the family pool; and6
WHEREAS, Sonja Anderson was attempting to rescue her two-year-old son who had7
driven his tricycle into the pool, and she jumped in after him even though she could not8
swim; and9
WHEREAS, Johnny Anderson created the Sonja and Jonathan Anderson Aquatics10
Foundation to teach families how to swim and raise awareness of water safety, and he plans11
to award scholarships for swimming lessons once his fundraising has reached $25,000; and12
WHEREAS, Anderson worked for former Governor Kathleen Blanco and served as13
chairman of the Southern University System board, and he relies on his faith for inner14
strength.15
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the16
Legislature of Louisiana recognizes the month of May 2014 as "Sonja and Jonathan17
Anderson Water Safety Month" and encourages all citizens of the state to educate and18
inform others about water safety.19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted20
