HLS 14RS-5980 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 212 BY REPRESENTATIVE BURRELL COMMENDATIONS: Welcomes the Ozarks route cyclists from the Texas 4000 team as they ride through Shreveport, Louisiana, en route to Anchorage, Alaska, and to commend them for their outstanding dedication to fighting cancer by sharing hope, knowledge, and charity A RESOLUTION1 To welcome the Ozarks route cyclists from the Texas 4000 team as they ride through2 Shreveport, Louisiana, en route to Anchorage, Alaska, from Austin, Texas, and to3 commend them for their outstanding dedication to fighting cancer by sharing hope4 and raising money for cancer research and cancer treatment centers and helping5 others in their fight against cancer.6 WHEREAS, the Texas 4000 team is a dedicated group of cyclists, all University of7 Texas students, who are passionate young people who train, fund-raise, educate, and bring8 hope to people who are fighting cancer; and9 WHEREAS, the mission of Texas 4000 is to share HOPE, KNOWLEDGE, and10 CHARITY from Texas to Alaska and beyond; and11 WHEREAS, this organization shares HOPE by letting people touched by cancer12 know that there are people like the members of Texas 4000 who are riding their bikes for13 them and who are determined to help eliminate the disease; and14 WHEREAS, this organization shares KNOWLEDGE by bringing lifesaving15 information about cancer prevention to large and small communities along their trek; and16 WHEREAS, Texas 4000 shares CHARITY by making a commitment to support17 cancer research and is helping to lead the charge in helping those affected by cancer18 overcome it; and 19 HLS 14RS-5980 ORIGINAL HR NO. 212 Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, the goal of this group of cyclists is to cultivate the next generation to1 lead the fight against cancer through their cornerstone event which is a more than four2 thousand mile bike ride from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, making it the longest3 annual charity bike ride in the world; and4 WHEREAS, once the Texas 4000 team departs for Alaska, they divide into three5 routes: the Rocky route that heads to Alaska through the Rocky Mountains; the Sierra route6 which travels through the Sierra mountain range and up the west coast; and the Ozarks route,7 which starts through the Ozark mountain range and up through the Midwest; and 8 WHEREAS, for the first time in ten years since the bike ride has begun, the Ozarks9 route cyclists, which represent one-third of the Texas 4000 team, will be riding through10 Shreveport, Louisiana, on June 8, 2014; and11 WHEREAS, the 2014 Texas 4000 team has already raised over $525,000 for the fight12 against cancer; and13 WHEREAS, in their effort to raise funds for Texas 4000 for Cancer and the M.D.14 Anderson Cancer Center, the cyclists hope to raise awareness of the many local cancer15 centers located in Shreveport, Louisiana, such as the Christus Schumpert Cancer Treatment16 Center, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, and the LSU Health Science Center Shreveport, as well17 as other cancer research centers in this state; and18 WHEREAS, to mark this momentous occasion, a collective group of local cycling19 enthusiasts and participating organizations such as LOCO (Louisiana Off-Road Cycling20 Organization), Team LaS'port, Shreveport Bike Club, SBC Bike Social, Sunrise Triathlon21 Club, A Better Shreveport, and You Know Me have organized a reception at the Shreveport22 Water Works Museum in Downtown Shreveport to welcome the Ozarks route cyclists to this23 state and to their great city; and24 WHEREAS, in order to organize such a momentous event, the efforts of April Dahm,25 David Nelson, Leonard Service, Maurice Loridans, Stephen Pederson, and Regan Horn26 should not go unnoticed; and27 WHEREAS, although the Texas 4000 team is in its tenth year of biking from Austin,28 Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, it is the first time these cyclists have stopped in Shreveport,29 Louisiana. 30 HLS 14RS-5980 ORIGINAL HR NO. 212 Page 3 of 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the1 Legislature of Louisiana does hereby welcome the Ozarks route cyclists from the Texas2 4000 team to the state of Louisiana, city of Shreveport, and commends them for their3 outstanding dedication to fighting cancer by sharing hope and raising money for cancer4 research and cancer treatment centers and helping others in their fight against cancer. 5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted6 to the Ozarks route cyclists from the Texas 4000 team.7 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
