HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 24

COMMENDATIONS: Commends River Oaks Square Arts Center upon the celebration of
its 30th birthday
A RESOLUTION1
To commend River Oaks Square Arts Center upon the celebration of its thirtieth birthday of2
serving the community of Alexandria.3
WHEREAS, in 1899, James Wade Bolton acquired a home in the city of Alexandria;4
and5
WHEREAS, in 1979, the Bolton family donated their family home to the city of6
Alexandria to be used solely for the arts; and7
WHEREAS, the Bolton Home has become home to many programs and artists of8
River Oaks since 1984 pursuant to an operating agreement between the city of Alexandria9
and River Oaks Square Arts Center; and10
WHEREAS, the Bolton Home became the catalyst for River Oaks Square Arts11
Center and exemplifies Queen Anne Revival architecture that features details of long-leaf12
yellow pine framing and a raised on-pier foundation; and13
WHEREAS, the Bolton Home in River Oaks Square Arts Center holds the honor of14
being listed on the National Registry of Historic Places; and15
WHEREAS, River Oaks Square serves as both a contemporary visual arts and fine16
crafts center that consists of resident artists who work with a variety of media; and17
WHEREAS, in 1999, a new fifteen thousand square foot studio annex building that18
houses twenty-five studios, three galleries, an on-site arts academy, a full-scale ceramic19
studio, and rental space opened its doors to meet the changing and additional needs of River20

WHEREAS, for over thirty years, it has been River Oaks Square Arts Center's1
mission to promote contemporary visual art and fine crafts, to stimulate interest in,2
exhibition of, education of, and appreciation for regional, resident, and local artists and their3
work.4
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the5
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend River Oaks Square Arts Center upon the6
celebration of its thirtieth birthday.7
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted8
to River Oaks Square Arts Center.9
