HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 25
BY REPRESENTATIVE EDWARDS
COMMENDATIONS:  Recognizes the Tangipahoa Parish Fair as the oldest fair in
Louisiana
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize the Tangipahoa Parish Fair as the oldest fair in Louisiana.2
WHEREAS, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair is a time-honored tradition in the state of3
Louisiana; and4
WHEREAS, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair is an event in which area residents can look5
forward to midway rides, entertainment, food, exhibits, a petting zoo, a rodeo, and an6
American Indian exhibition; and7
WHEREAS, Tangipahoa Parish Fairs give area residents the opportunity to enjoy a8
wide variety of activities, including queen pageants, baby and youth beauty pageants, essay9
contests, talent shows, web page design contests, poster contests, school booths, and various10
agricultural and animal contests; and11
WHEREAS, the first Tangipahoa Parish Fair was held in the late nineteenth century,12
making the fair older than other historic fairs in Louisiana such as the Beauregard Parish Fair13
and the Washington Parish Fair; and14
WHEREAS, the first Tangipahoa Parish Fair was held in the northeastern part of the15
present town of Amite and included agricultural contests, featuring cauliflower and radishes,16
as well as harness racing in which horse owners competed in a large circular track for17
coveted prizes and trophies; and18
WHEREAS, after well over a century, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair is still going strong19
and has even experienced a growth in popularity in recent decades; and 20 HLS 14RS-1510	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair will be held in Amite during the first1
weekend of October this year.2
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the3
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the Tangipahoa Parish Fair as the oldest fair4
in the state of Louisiana and encourages residents of the state to attend the festivities5
associated with the state's oldest fair in the first weekend of October 2014.6
