ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 25 BY REPRESENTATIVE EDWARDS A RESOLUTION To recognize the Tangipahoa Parish Fair as the oldest fair in Louisiana. WHEREAS, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair is a time-honored tradition in the state of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair is an event in which area residents can look forward to midway rides, entertainment, food, exhibits, a petting zoo, a rodeo, and an American Indian exhibition; and WHEREAS, Tangipahoa Parish Fairs give area residents the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of activities, including queen pageants, baby and youth beauty pageants, essay contests, talent shows, web page design contests, poster contests, school booths, and various agricultural and animal contests; and WHEREAS, the first Tangipahoa Parish Fair was held in the late nineteenth century, making the fair older than other historic fairs in Louisiana such as the Beauregard Parish Fair and the Washington Parish Fair; and WHEREAS, the first Tangipahoa Parish Fair was held in the northeastern part of the present town of Amite and included agricultural contests, featuring cauliflower and radishes, as well as harness racing in which horse owners competed in a large circular track for coveted prizes and trophies; and WHEREAS, after well over a century, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair is still going strong and has even experienced a growth in popularity in recent decades; and WHEREAS, the Tangipahoa Parish Fair will be held in Amite during the first weekend of October this year. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the Tangipahoa Parish Fair as the oldest fair ENROLLEDHR NO. 25 Page 2 of 2 in the state of Louisiana and encourages residents of the state to attend the festivities associated with the state's oldest fair in the first weekend of October 2014.
