HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 43
BY REPRESENTATIVE SMITH
A RESOLUTION
To recognize Thursday, March 27, 2014, as Southern Poverty Law Center Day at the state
capitol and to commend the Southern Poverty Law Center for its invaluable
contributions to the state of Louisiana.
WHEREAS, the Southern Poverty Law Center was founded in Montgomery,
Alabama, in 1971, is an internationally recognized civil rights organization that is dedicated
to fighting hate, teaching tolerance, and seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of
society, and is a respected civil rights institution in the South; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, the Southern Poverty Law Center established an office in New
Orleans, Louisiana, to ensure that all Louisiana students have equal access to a high-quality
public education and that Louisiana's most vulnerable children have access to community-
based supports and services that are necessary for them to thrive and become valuable
members of their communities; and
WHEREAS, through its commitment to protecting the rights of Louisiana's children
and families, the Southern Poverty Law Center continues to make a contribution of
immeasurable value to the state of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the staff at the Southern Poverty Law Center
for their invaluable contributions in serving the citizens of the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives does hereby
recognize Thursday, March 27, 2014, as Southern Poverty Law Center Day at the state
capitol.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
Southern Poverty Law Center.
