SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Commends the efforts of The Links, Incorporated and
recognizes Wednesday, April 23, 2014, as Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the efforts of The Links, Incorporated and to recognize Wednesday, April 23,2
2014, as Louisiana Links Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.3
WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated is an international organization of women of4
color dedicated to improving the quality of life for humankind; and5
WHEREAS, the worldwide organization has more than twelve thousand members6
in two hundred seventy-six chapters in forty-one states, the District of Columbia, and the7
Commonwealth of the Bahamas; and8
WHEREAS, there are eight Links chapters in the state of Louisiana, namely the9
Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Crescent City, LaCapitale, Monroe-Grambling, New Orleans,10
Pontchartrain, and Shreveport chapters; and11
WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated was founded in the year 1946 by Margaret12
Hawkins and Sarah Scott in hopes of promoting civic, educational, and cultural concerns13
through the creation of their service organization; and14
WHEREAS, the members of The Links, Incorporated are influential decision makers15
and opinion leaders; and16
WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated has attracted many distinguished women who17
are individual achievers and who have made a difference in their communities and in the18

WHEREAS, the members of The Links are business and civic leaders, role models,1
mentors, activists, and volunteers who work towards a common vision by engaging like-2
minded organizations and individuals for partnership; and3
WHEREAS, the outstanding programming of The Links, Incorporated have five4
facets, which include National Trends and Service, the Arts, Services to Youth, International5
Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services; and6
WHEREAS, the programs are implemented through strategies such as public7
information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns; and8
WHEREAS, the mission of The Links, Incorporated has been to discern a need and9
to fulfill it, which The Links has done by donating money and time to charitable efforts,10
including one million dollars to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored11
People and two million dollars to the United Negro College Fund; and12
WHEREAS, its members contribute more than five hundred thousand documented13
hours of community service annually strengthening their communities and enhancing the14
nation; and15
WHEREAS, Links Day at the capitol is a project of the southern area of The Links,16
Incorporated, which includes chapters in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia,17
Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina; and18
WHEREAS, the first Louisiana Links Day at the Louisiana State Capitol occurred19
on May 19, 2005; and20
WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2005 to21
inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies in line22
with Healthy People 2010; and23
WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2006 to24
inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies that25
provided the funding and infrastructure necessary for improvement of healthcare in26
Louisiana; and27
WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2007 to28
inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies that29
closed the gap in poverty and education, that provided adequate and affordable healthcare30 HLS 14RS-2731 ORIGINAL

to all citizens, that brought Louisiana people home, that revitalized New Orleans public1
schools, and that guaranteed displaced Louisiana voters their constitutional right to vote; and2
WHEREAS, members of the Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2008 to3
inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies aimed4
at reducing the obesity rate for children in Louisiana and other healthcare and education5
initiatives aimed at creating a better quality of life in Louisiana; and6
WHEREAS, members of the Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2009, 2010,7
2011, and 2012, to advocate for healthcare and education issues to continue to improve the8
lives of all Louisiana citizens; and9
WHEREAS, in 2013, the Louisiana Links continue their efforts at the capitol by10
advocating for laws and policies in healthcare, education, voting rights, gun control, and11
equal pay for women; and12
WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated merits a special measure of commendation as13
they visit the Louisiana State Capitol on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, for Louisiana Links14
Day.15
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the16
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the efforts of The Links, Incorporated and17
does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 23, 2014, as Louisiana Links Day at the Louisiana18
State Capitol.19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted20
to the southern area director of The Links, Incorporated.21
