HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 77

CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the death of Dan Levy, Jr., of Metairie,
Louisiana
A RESOLUTION1
To express the sincere condolences of the Louisiana House of Representatives upon the2
death of Dan Levy, Jr., of Metairie, Louisiana.3
WHEREAS, it is with sincere regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Dan Levy after his5
courageous battle with cancer; and6
WHEREAS, Dan Levy was born on November 7, 1924, and died on March 31, 2014,7
at the age of eighty-nine, after a devoted life of service to his family, church, and his8
community; and9
WHEREAS, Dan Levy grew up in Sacred Heart Church Parish in mid-city New10
Orleans and attended Jesuit High School, Marion Military Institute, Louisiana State11
University, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Columbia University in12
New York; and13
WHEREAS, after his heroic service in post-World War II Germany, Mr. Levy, along14
with his wife Shirley Raphael Levy, returned to West Point where he became a mathematics15
instructor and assistant baseball and soccer coach; and16
WHEREAS, in 1956, Dan and Shirley Levy returned home to New Orleans where17
Mr. Levy joined his father's business of operating clubs and restaurants on world famous18
Bourbon Street; and19
WHEREAS, throughout the years, the Levy clubs were home to many of New20
Orleans' great musicians, including Al Hirt and Pete Fountain; and21 HLS 14RS-2722	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, for his commendable service to his community, Dan Levy was1
appointed by Mayor Moon Landrieu to serve on the Vieux Carre Commission in the early2
1970s, and he was a charter member of the Krewe of Bacchus; and3
WHEREAS, Dan Levy was known for his dedication as an active parishioner of St.4
Louis King of France Parish, where he served in numerous leadership and volunteer5
positions, and was a personal confidant and advisor over the years to the many priests who6
served the parish; and7
WHEREAS, Mr. Levy will be remembered as the patriarch of Bucktown's large Levy8
family, as his home was open to all and he made sure that no one ever left feeling like a9
stranger; and10
WHEREAS, Dan Levy's enthusiasm for life will forever be cherished by everyone11
who knew him; and12
WHEREAS, Dan Levy, Jr., is survived by his loving wife of sixty-eight years,13
Shirley Raphael Levy; his eleven children, Jaqueline Levy Hughes, Daniel Casey Levy,14
Patrick Levy, Sr., Michael Levy, Sr., Kathy Levy Cusimano, Peggy Levy Serio, Shirley15
Levy Dupre, Timothy Levy, Sr., Terri Levy Owens, Dana Levy Naccari, and Marie Levy16
Pechon; his fifty-two grandchildren and forty-five great grandchildren with five more on the17
way; and his sisters, Clare Levy Caballero and Jackie Levy Caballero.18
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the19
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express its condolences to the family of Dan Levy, Jr.,20
who will be remembered by all those whose lives he touched and inspired.21
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted22
to the family of Mr. Dan Levy, Jr.23
