HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 8
BY REPRESENTATIVE PIERRE
A RESOLUTION
To commend Sandra Chaisson Brown upon her selection by Louisiana Life magazine as a
Louisianian of the Year in 2014.
WHEREAS, Sandra Chaisson Brown grew up in Lafayette where she earned a
nursing degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and began her medical career
as a nurse at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Brown's desire to teach led her to New Orleans to obtain a master's
degree from the LSU Health Sciences Center, and while working at Charity Hospital in New
Orleans, Ms. Brown pursued a doctorate in nursing; and
WHEREAS, heeding the call to help launch a master's degree program at the nursing
school at Southern University and A&M College, Ms. Brown moved to Baton Rouge; after
being awarded a post-doctoral fellowship, she became certified as a nurse practitioner
through a program at the University of Tennessee and returned to Southern University to
launch a nurse practitioner program in 1996; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Brown expanded Southern University's offerings to include a Ph.D.
nursing program with a doctor of nursing practice curriculum, and for her dedication to
quality in nursing education at Southern University's nursing school, Ms. Brown was named
Nursing Educator of the Year by the Louisiana State Nurses Association and Louisiana
Nurses Foundation in the spring of 2013; and
WHEREAS, the Southern University nurse practitioner program graduates an
average of forty students a year, turns out the largest number of minority nurse practitioners
in the country, and its students boast a ninety-five percent success rate on the national

WHEREAS, the health and prosperity of the citizens of Louisiana are due in large
part to the talents and skills of hardworking people like Sandra Chaisson Brown, and it is
appropriate to commend her upon her recognition as a Louisianian of the Year in 2014 by
Louisiana Life magazine.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Sandra Chaisson Brown upon her prestigious
designation by Louisiana Life magazine as a Louisianian of the Year in 2014; does hereby
express its appreciation for the positive imprint her work in nursing has made upon the
healthy fabric of our great state; and does hereby extend best wishes to Sandra Chaisson
Brown as she continues to sow seeds of good health in the land of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Sandra Chaisson Brown.
