COMMENDATIONS:  Recognizes Monday, April 28, 2014, as Southern University Day
at the state capitol
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Monday, April 28, 2014, as Southern University Day at the state capitol.2
WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-fourth year of3
excellence in higher education; and4
WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five5
faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget, and the university was relocated to Baton6
Rouge in 1914; and7
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to become one of the8
country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging9
from certificates to doctorates; and10
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses11
in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural12
Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and13
WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the14
nation's only historically black 1890 land grant university system; and15
WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and16
Southern University's alumni have made significant contributions to their chosen professions17
throughout the state, nation, and world; and18
WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the19
celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-four20

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the1
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Monday, April 28, 2014, as Southern2
University Day at the state capitol, does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride3
and honor that Southern University brings to the state of Louisiana, does hereby express4
sincere appreciation for its singular legacy of excellence, and does hereby extend to the5
entire Southern University family best wishes upon this memorable day.6
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted7
to the president of the Southern University System.8
