ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 99 BY REPRESENTATIVE HONORE A RESOLUTION To recognize Monday, April 28, 2014, as Southern University Day at the state capitol. WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-fourth year of excellence in higher education; and WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget, and the university was relocated to Baton Rouge in 1914; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to become one of the country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging from certificates to doctorates; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the nation's only historically black 1890 land grant university system; and WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and Southern University's alumni have made significant contributions to their chosen professions throughout the state, nation, and world; and WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-four years. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Monday, April 28, 2014, as Southern University Day at the state capitol, does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride ENROLLEDHR NO. 99 Page 2 of 2 and honor that Southern University brings to the state of Louisiana, does hereby express sincere appreciation for its singular legacy of excellence, and does hereby extend to the entire Southern University family best wishes upon this memorable day.
