CRIMINAL JUSTICE. Provides relative to the notice of an execution required to be given
to the victim's family. (8/1/14)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 15:570(E)(1), relative to executions of death sentences; to2
provide relative to the notice of an execution required to be given to a victim's3
family; to require a victim's family to register with the Crime Victims Services4
Bureau in order to obtain notice of the date and time of the offender's execution; and5
to provide for related matters.6
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:7
Section 1. R.S. 15:570(E)(1) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:8
ยง570. Execution; officials and witnesses; minors excluded; time of execution;9
notice to victim's relatives10

E.(1) The secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections shall,12
at least ten days prior to the execution, either give written notice or verbal notice,13
followed by written notice placed in the United States mail within five days14
thereafter, of the date and time of execution to the victim's parents, or guardian,15
spouse, and any adult children who have indicated to the secretary that they desire16
such notice by registering with the Crime Victims Services Bureau of the17 SB NO. 147

Department of Public Safety and Corrections. The secretary, in such notice, shall1
give the named parties the option of attending the execution.2

Present law provides relative to capital cases and the execution of death sentences.
Present law provides that the secretary of the Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections
(DPSC), at least 10 days prior to an execution, is to give either written notice, or verbal
notice followed by written notice, of the date and time of an offender's execution to the
victim's parents or guardian, spouse, and any adult children who have indicated to the
secretary that they desire such notice, and in the notice give the named parties the option of
attending the execution.
Proposed law retains present law and adds that the victim's family members are to indicate
that they desire notice of the date and time of the execution by registering with the Crime
Victims Services Bureau of DPSC.
Effective August 1, 2014.
