[R.S. 1:13(B) and 24:177(E)] Mills SB No. 186 Present law creates a municipal fire and police civil service board in each municipality that is subject to the municipal fire and police civil service system for large municipalities (those with a population of between 13,000 and 250,000). Generally each such board has five members, three appointed by the governing authority of the municipality and one each elected from the fire and police departments. Present law (R.S. 33:2495.2) provides that if the city of New Iberia ceases to operate either its fire department or its police department, the civil service system shall continue in full force and effect for the remaining department as provided by law. Proposed law provides that if present law (R.S. 33:2495.2) becomes applicable, the municipal fire and police civil service board in New Iberia will include only one member elected from the fire and police service and one member appointed by the mayor if such changes are approved by the governing authority of New Iberia. Effective upon signature of governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
