Provides with respect to the payment of insurance premiums for retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs of the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office. (7/1/14) AN ACT1 To enact R.S. 13:5554(G)(3), relative to the payment of group insurance premium costs for2 certain retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs; to provide for eligibility for payment of3 such costs for retired sheriffs and retired deputy sheriffs of the Acadia Parish4 Sheriff's Office; to provide for effective dates; and to provide for related matters.5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6 Section 1. R.S. 13:5554(G)(3) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7 ยง5554. Group insurance; kinds; amounts; subrogation8 * * *9 G.(1) * * *10 (3) Notwithstanding the provisions of Paragraph (1) of this Subsection,11 the sheriff of Acadia Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the12 premium costs of group insurance for any sheriff or deputy sheriff who is13 eligible to receive benefits from the Sheriffs' Pension and Relief Fund, as14 follows:15 (a) Fifty percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and16 medical expense insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section17 SB NO. 33 SLS 14RS-184 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 Coding: Words which are struck through are deletions from existing law; words in boldface type and underscored are additions. and the first ten thousand dollars of life insurance contracted for under the1 provisions of this Section if the sheriff or deputy sheriff has attained the age of2 fifty-five years with twenty or more years of full-time continuous service with3 the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office.4 (b) One hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital,5 surgical, and medical expense insurance contracted for under the provisions of6 this Section and the first ten thousand dollars of life insurance contracted for7 under the provisions of this Section if the sheriff or deputy sheriff has8 completed thirty years or more of full-time creditable service with twenty years9 of continuous service with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office, regardless of age.10 (c) The provisions of Paragraph (1) of this Subsection, as applicable to11 the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office, shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs12 retired on or before June 30, 2014. The provisions of Subparagraphs (a) and13 (b) of this Paragraph shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire on14 or after July 1, 2014; however, any sheriff or deputy sheriff who has met the15 eligibility requirements pursuant to Paragraph (1) of this Subsection, on or16 before June 30, 2014, may retire at any time with benefits as provided in17 Paragraph (1) of this Subsection.18 * * *19 Section 2. This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2014; if vetoed by the governor20 and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on July 1,21 2014, or on the day following such approval by the legislature, whichever is later.22 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Cathy Wells. DIGEST Present law requires the sheriffs of certain parishes pay 100% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense, and life insurance from the sheriff's general fund for any retired sheriff or deputy sheriff entitled to receive benefits from the Sheriffs' Pension and Relief Fund and who is at least 55 years of age and has 15 years of full-time service or has 30 years of full-time service, regardless of age. Proposed law provides that present law shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs of Acadia Parish who are eligible to retire and meet certain requirements on or before June 30, 2014. Proposed law regarding Acadia parish requires the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and medical expense insurance, and the first $10,000 of life insurance to be paid by the sheriff from the sheriff's general fund for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who first become eligible to retire and subsequently retire on or after July 1, 2014, as follows: (1)50% with at least 20 years of continuous service with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office and who has attained the age of 55 years. (2)100% with at least 30 years of creditable service with 20 of those years as continuous service with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office, regardless of age. Effective July 1, 2014.
