SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 117
BY SENATOR GALLOT AND REPRESENTATIVE SHADOIN
COMMENDATIONS. Commends Ben Serio, senior at Ruston High School, on being
named a National Merit Scholarship winner.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend and congratulate Ben Serio, a senior at Ruston High School, on being selected2
as a National Merit Scholarship recipient.3
WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation annually awards to4
distinguished high school seniors corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards5
financed by about two hundred corporations, company foundations and other business6
organizations; and7
WHEREAS, scholars are selected from students who advance to the finalist level in8
the National Merit Scholarship competition and meet criteria of their scholarship sponsors;9
and10
WHEREAS, Ben Serio, a senior at Ruston High School, has been selected as one of11
one thousand National Merit Scholarship recipients throughout the country as he was chosen12
out of sixteen thousand candidates to compete in the final rounds based on his abilities, skills13
and accomplishments which included his academic record, information about his school's14
curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, a written recommendation from the15
high school officials, information about his leadership, and his own written essay; and16
WHEREAS, Ben Serio earned a 4.0 GPA as well as a 34 on his ACT, serves as drum17
major, uniform staff manager, and principal horn for the Ruston High School Bearcat band,18 SCR NO. 117

and has held both the state and local office of parliamentarian in the Future Business Leaders1
of America; and2
WHEREAS, he is a volunteer with Rolling Hills Thrift Store, helps present the Hot3
Halloween Happenings at the Ruston Fire Department, and is involved in the Vigil Choir and4
Catholic Youth Organization at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church; and5
WHEREAS, Ben Serio has placed first in Chemistry, Algebra II and World6
Geography in the District Literary Rally and finished fifth in the National FBLA7
Parliamentary Procedure competition; and8
WHEREAS, following graduation, he plans to attend college and double major in9
music education and engineering; and10
WHEREAS, Ben Serio merits a special measure of commendation for his11
outstanding achievements as a student and citizen.12
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby13
commend and congratulate Ben Serio, senior at Ruston High School, on being named a14
National Merit Scholarship recipient, does hereby commend him for his outstanding15
accomplishments, and does hereby extend to him best wishes for full measures of success16
and happiness in all of his future endeavors.17
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Ben18
Serio.19
