SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 117
BY SENATORS GALLOT AND WALSWORTH AND REPRESENTATIVE SHADOIN
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend and congratulate Ben Serio, a senior at Ruston High School, on being selected
as a National Merit Scholarship recipient.
WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation annually awards to
distinguished high school seniors corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards
financed by about two hundred corporations, company foundations and other business
organizations; and
WHEREAS, scholars are selected from students who advance to the finalist level in
the National Merit Scholarship competition and meet criteria of their scholarship sponsors;
and
WHEREAS, Ben Serio, a senior at Ruston High School, has been selected as one of
one thousand National Merit Scholarship recipients throughout the country as he was chosen
out of sixteen thousand candidates to compete in the final rounds based on his abilities, skills
and accomplishments which included his academic record, information about his school's
curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, a written recommendation from the
high school officials, information about his leadership, and his own written essay; and
WHEREAS, Ben Serio earned a 4.0 GPA as well as a 34 on his ACT, serves as drum
major, uniform staff manager, and principal horn for the Ruston High School Bearcat band,
and has held both the state and local office of parliamentarian in the Future Business Leaders
of America; and
WHEREAS, he is a volunteer with Rolling Hills Thrift Store, helps present the Hot
Halloween Happenings at the Ruston Fire Department, and is involved in the Vigil Choir and
Catholic Youth Organization at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS, Ben Serio has placed first in Chemistry, Algebra II and World
Geography in the District Literary Rally and finished fifth in the National FBLA
Parliamentary Procedure competition; and
WHEREAS, following graduation, he plans to attend college and double major in SCR NO. 117	ENROLLED

music education and engineering; and
WHEREAS, Ben Serio merits a special measure of commendation for his
outstanding achievements as a student and citizen.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend and congratulate Ben Serio, senior at Ruston High School, on being named a
National Merit Scholarship recipient, does hereby commend him for his outstanding
accomplishments, and does hereby extend to him best wishes for full measures of success
and happiness in all of his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Ben
Serio.
