SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 122

COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile on its 150
th
 year
of continuous business in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend and congratulate Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile on its one hundred and2
fiftieth year of continuous business operations in Natchitoches, Louisiana.3
WHEREAS, Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile was founded in 1863 by Prussian4
immigrants Harris and Adolph Kaffie and its first store was located on the corner of Trudeau5
and Front streets; and6
WHEREAS, in 1892, the present building on Front Street was erected and the7
business has operated from this location ever since; and8
WHEREAS, in 1920, the Kaffies hired eighteen year old Titus Frederick as a9
drayman, who by 1936 had worked his way up to become the vice president of the company10
and the general manager, and by 1956 he was named a partner and part owner of the11
business; and12
WHEREAS, two generations of Fredericks followed Titus in the management of the13
family business, and helped to maintain its status as a Natchitoches institution; and14
WHEREAS, during its successful history, Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile has15
always served as a comprehensive general store serving the needs of the people in the16
Natchitoches area and has survived periods of great challenges, including the American Civil17
War, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II; and18 SCR NO. 122

WHEREAS, the third generation of the Frederick family has devoted itself to1
preserving the historic nature of the building, having barely changed the structure since a2
1932 remodeling job, and visitors are always greeted with helpful hospitality; and3
WHEREAS, as Natchitoches celebrates its three hundred year anniversary, it is proud4
to include Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile as part of its rich and storied history.5
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby6
commend and congratulate Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile on its one hundred and7
fiftieth year of continuous business operations in downtown Natchitoches, for its place as8
a historic institution in the city of Natchitoches, and for the many years of service it provided9
to countless customers.10
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the11
Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile.12
