Commends Tynes Hildebrand on receiving the 2014 Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership Award and for being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend Tynes Hildebrand on receiving the 2014 Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports2 Leadership Award and for being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame3 Induction Class.4 WHEREAS, the Dave Dixon Award is presented annually by the Louisiana Sports5 Writers Association's thirty-member Hall of Fame selection committee to an individual who6 has played a decisive role as a sports leader or administrator benefitting Louisiana or7 bringing credit to Louisiana on the national or international level; and8 WHEREAS, Tynes Hildebrand, a native of Florien in Sabine Parish, won one9 hundred ninety-one games as head coach at Northwestern State University from 1965 to10 1980 and served as athletics director from 1983 to 1996; and11 WHEREAS, as a coach, Mr. Hildebrand ranks third in career wins at Northwestern12 State University (NSU), led the Demons into NCAA Division I and national tournament13 appearances at the NAIA level and assisted with the training camp of the 1972 United States14 Olympic Team at the invitation of legendary coach Henry Iba; and15 WHEREAS, as an athletic director, Mr. Hildebrand is remembered for steering NSU16 into the Southland Conference in 1987, and amidst challenging budget situations, for17 unprecedented competitive and fundraising success, and finally, for mentoring and grooming18 SCR NO. 140 SLS 14RS-4330 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 a steady stream of young athletics administrators who continue to impact today's1 intercollegiate and professional sports scene; and2 WHEREAS, Mr. Hildebrand also became a traveling evaluator for the initial round3 of the NCAA's Division I certification process that every Division I institution must undergo4 each decade and has served on numerous NCAA committees, including the Division I-AA5 selection panel, until his retirement in 1996; and6 WHEREAS, in 1997, he began his current role as an NCAA officials observer in the7 Southeastern, Big XII, Conference USA, Western Athletic, Southwestern Athletic,8 Southland and Sun Belt conferences; and 9 WHEREAS, when the NCAA reorganized its basketball officiating administrative10 structure in 2006, Mr. Hildebrand was chosen to represent the south as one of only four11 regional representatives who work to evaluate and select officials to work each round of the12 NCAA Tournament; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Hildebrand also works as a presenter, evaluator and instructor14 during the offseason at numerous officiating clinics; and15 WHEREAS, throughout his nearly fifty year career, Louisiana's native son Mr.16 Hildebrand has used his leadership skills and talents to impact college basketball in a17 positive way and has been an inspiration and role model to his players and assistant coaches18 as well as other coaches, administrators, officials and colleagues. 19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby20 commend Tynes Hildebrand on receiving the 2014 Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership21 Award and for being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. 22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to23 Tynes Hildebrand.24 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Dawn Romero Watson.
