Commends Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote on being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote on being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports2 Hall of Fame Induction Class.3 WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the people of Louisiana have learned of the4 prestigious honor bestowed upon the renowned football player and beloved coach Richard5 Joseph "Moon" Ducote on his induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and6 WHEREAS, the inductees are chosen after extensive deliberations by an expert panel7 of Louisiana Sports Writers' Association members from across the state who annually8 consider more than one hundred twenty nominees for this honor; and9 WHEREAS, Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote was born in Cottonport, Louisiana, on10 August 28, 1887, but later became a resident of Mobile, Alabama, and attended college at11 Auburn University, where he played on the football team from 1915 to 1917 as a fullback12 and a guard; and13 WHEREAS, after his successful college career, he had the opportunity to play14 professional football from 1918 to 1921 on several teams, including the Cleveland Naval15 Reserve football team, the Cleveland Tigers, the Mobile Bears, the Portsmouth Truckers, and16 the Charlotte Hornets; and17 WHEREAS, in addition to being a star player on the field, he also become a18 SCR NO. 155 SLS 14RS-4323 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 renowned coach and officiator, serving as an assistant football coach for Louisiana State1 University for two years and as head basketball coach for one season, as athletic director at2 Loyola University, as head football coach at Spring Hill College, and as an official in the3 Southern and Southeastern conferences, where he helped officiate the 1935 Rose Bowl as4 the field judge; and5 WHEREAS, his proud and distinguished career ended at Loyola University, where6 he was rehired as athletic director, a position he kept until his death on March 26, 1937; and7 WHEREAS, Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote, an extraordinary team member and8 coach whose proud accomplishments will be remembered for many years, rightly deserves9 his place among our great sports legends as a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.10 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby11 commend and congratulate Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote on being named to the 201412 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the14 family of Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote.15 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by McHenry Lee.
