Commends the St. Thomas More softball team upon winning the Class 4A state championship. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend the St. Thomas More softball team upon winning the Class 4A state2 championship of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association for the second3 consecutive year.4 WHEREAS, the number one ranked St. Thomas More girls defeated the number5 three ranked Vandebilt Catholic team by a score of eleven to five at Frasch Park in Sulphur;6 and7 WHEREAS, the STM girls put eight runs on the board in the first three innings,8 fueled by five doubles, to put the Cougars off to an early lead in the final game; and9 WHEREAS, the Vandebilt team scored four runs in the third and fifth innings,10 reducing the Cougar lead, but were not able to catch up; and11 WHEREAS, St. Thomas More continued their offensive bombardment and12 eventually put eleven runs on the board; and13 WHEREAS, STM's Whitney Romero, who pitched in the final game and hit a home14 run in the fourth inning to extend the Cougar's lead of nine to one, earned Class 4A finals15 Most Outstanding Player honors; and16 WHEREAS, Romero played a complete game, both offensively and defensively,17 going three for four with a home run and two doubles and four RBI's while striking out five18 SCR NO. 170 SLS 14RS-4718 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 from the circle; and1 WHEREAS, the Cougars had spent this year proving that their state Class 4A title2 last year was not a fluke; and3 WHEREAS, Cougars coach Andria Waguespack expressed her delight that the team4 came out aggressively at the plate, scoring two runs in the first, five in the second, and one5 in both the third and fourth innings, to lead nine to one; and6 WHEREAS, the offense was led by Bailey Hemphill who was three for four with two7 doubles and two RBI's, Courtney Halsell who was two for four with one double and one8 RBI, Allison Derise who was three for five with two doubles and two RBI's, Jamie Landry9 who went one for five with a double and an RBI, and Tori Andrus who was one for four with10 two RBI's; and11 WHEREAS, in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Terriers of Vandebilt scored three12 runs, but the Cougars answered in the top of the sixth with RBI doubles from Romero and13 Hemphill giving STM a commanding lead of eleven to four; and14 WHEREAS, St. Thomas More defeated Teurlings Catholic High School in a15 semifinal game to earn their way to the final game; and16 WHEREAS, Cougar player Bailey Hemphill was named the most outstanding player17 in that semifinal game.18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby19 commend the St. Thomas More Cougars on winning their second straight LHSAA Class A420 state softball championship.21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to St.22 Thomas More softball coach, Andria Waguespack.23 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Mary Dozier O'Brien.
