Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 170 BY SENATOR CORTEZ A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend the St. Thomas More softball team upon winning the Class 4A state championship of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association for the second consecutive year. WHEREAS, the number one ranked St. Thomas More girls defeated the number three ranked Vandebilt Catholic team by a score of eleven to five at Frasch Park in Sulphur; and WHEREAS, the STM girls put eight runs on the board in the first three innings, fueled by five doubles, to put the Cougars off to an early lead in the final game; and WHEREAS, the Vandebilt team scored four runs in the third and fifth innings, reducing the Cougar lead, but were not able to catch up; and WHEREAS, St. Thomas More continued their offensive bombardment and eventually put eleven runs on the board; and WHEREAS, STM's Whitney Romero, who pitched in the final game and hit a home run in the fourth inning to extend the Cougar's lead of nine to one, earned Class 4A finals Most Outstanding Player honors; and WHEREAS, Romero played a complete game, both offensively and defensively, going three for four with a home run and two doubles and four RBI's while striking out five from the circle; and WHEREAS, the Cougars had spent this year proving that their state Class 4A title last year was not a fluke; and WHEREAS, Cougars coach Andria Waguespack expressed her delight that the team came out aggressively at the plate, scoring two runs in the first, five in the second, and one in both the third and fourth innings, to lead nine to one; and WHEREAS, the offense was led by Bailey Hemphill who was three for four with two doubles and two RBI's, Courtney Halsell who was two for four with one double and one RBI, Allison Derise who was three for five with two doubles and two RBI's, Jamie Landry who went one for five with a double and an RBI, and Tori Andrus who was one for four with SCR NO. 170 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 two RBI's; and WHEREAS, in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Terriers of Vandebilt scored three runs, but the Cougars answered in the top of the sixth with RBI doubles from Romero and Hemphill giving STM a commanding lead of eleven to four; and WHEREAS, St. Thomas More defeated Teurlings Catholic High School in a semifinal game to earn their way to the final game; and WHEREAS, Cougar player Bailey Hemphill was named the most outstanding player in that semifinal game. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the St. Thomas More Cougars on winning their second straight LHSAA Class 4A state softball championship.
