Requests the Senate Committee on Senate and Governmental Affairs and the House Committee on House and Governmental Affairs study the possibility of requiring background checks for candidates and methods to ensure the qualification of candidates for political office. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To urge and request the Senate Committee on Senate and Governmental Affairs and the2 House Committee on House and Governmental Affairs to meet and function as a3 joint committee to study and make recommendations with respect to implementing4 background checks for candidates for political office.5 WHEREAS, there is currently no requirement that candidates for political office6 undergo background checks; and 7 WHEREAS, verifying the qualification of political candidates on qualification forms8 is important to all Louisiana citizens; and9 WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the legislature to examine the issues of10 candidate candor and qualification to ensure the fairness of Louisiana elections.11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana hereby requests12 the members of the Senate Committee on Senate and Governmental Affairs and the House13 Committee on House and Governmental Affairs to meet and function as a joint committee14 to study and make recommendations with respect to the verification of a candidate's15 qualifications and the possibility of requiring criminal and financial background checks of16 candidates.17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the joint committee may submit18 SCR NO. 3 SLS 14RS-450 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 recommendations to the Legislature of Louisiana by January 1, 2015.1 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Ashley Menou.
