SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 49

COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Kalani Brown of Salmen High School for being named
Gatorade Louisiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend and congratulate Kalani Brown of Salmen High School in Slidell for being2
named the 2013-2014 Gatorade Louisiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year.3
WHEREAS, in its twenty-ninth year of honoring the nation's best high school4
athletes, the Gatorade Company, in conjunction with USA Today High School Sports,5
Kalani Brown has been named the Gatorade Louisiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year,6
the first student from Salmen to receive this honor; and7
WHEREAS, Kalani is the daughter of former National Basketball Association player,8
P.J. Brown and wife Dee, is currently a junior at Salmen, where she maintains a B average9
in her academic work, and has volunteered her time with nonprofits, including the Special10
Olympics, Feed the Children and NBA Cares; and11
WHEREAS, in addition to this latest honor, Kalani was named the 2013 Class 4A12
Player of the year, the 2014 Class 4A state tournament Most Valuable Player and she was13
a member of the gold-medal winning United States team in the 2013 Under 16 world14
basketball championships for women; and15
WHEREAS, Kalani, who plays center, standing six feet five inches tall, led the16
Salmen Spartans to a season record of thirty-three wins and one loss and the second straight17
Class 4A state championship while compiling statistics including: an average of 20.4 points,18 SCR NO. 49

13 rebounds, 4.9 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game; and1
WHEREAS, currently ranked as the nation's number sixteen recruit in the class of2
2015 by Blue Star Basketball, Kalani has brought both aggression and passion to her game3
when needed by her team and has developed into a well-rounded player, evidenced by her4
statistics in scoring, rebounding, blocking shots, and passing the ball to teammates; and5
WHEREAS, Kalani, widely considered the state's top girls center, contributed6
significantly in both the semifinal game and the championship game by scoring a combined7
thirty-five points and thirty-five rebounds in the two games; and8
WHEREAS, Kalani's participation in several high-pressure games, including two9
state championship games, as well as her performance on the world stage, has revealed a10
player poised beyond her years; and11
WHEREAS, the Gatorade award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence,12
but also, high standards of academic achievement, and exemplary character demonstrated13
on and off the court, all areas in which Kalani has distinguished herself; and14
WHEREAS, the Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes a single15
athlete in each state and the District of Columbia in a variety of sanctioned high school16
sports, eventually naming a National Player of the Year in each sport.17
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby18
commend Kalani Brown of Salmen High School for being named the 2013-2014 Gatorade19
Louisiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year.20
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to21
Kalani Brown.22
