Commends Donna Lamonte of Baton Rouge upon receipt of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in mathematics. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend and to congratulate Donna Lamonte of Baton Rouge upon receipt of the2 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and to3 recognize her many contributions to education and the teaching profession.4 WHEREAS, Donna Lamonte, a first grade teacher at Louisiana State University5 Laboratory School, was among one hundred eight elementary school educators selected for6 the prestigious award; and7 WHEREAS, as a teacher, Mrs. Lamonte, believes that the focus of a primary8 mathematics curriculum should be seated in teaching young students to think and reason9 logically about math and to engage a child's innate ability to use number theory in the10 discovery of useful mental mathematics techniques to solve challenging real world11 problems; and12 WHEREAS, Donna Lamonte also acts as mentor for new teachers and student interns13 and imparts firm teaching tenets based on well-tested instructional practices; and14 WHEREAS, Mrs. Lamonte is a member of the National Council of Teachers of15 Mathematics; she holds the Hines Family Endowed Professorship for the LSU College of16 Human Sciences and Education and also serves on the leadership team for the Partnership17 for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers for the college of education; and18 SCR NO. 56 SLS 14RS-1790 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a1 Master of Education degree in elementary reading from LSU; she is certified in the2 elementary grades as a language arts reading specialist and is a National Board Certified3 Early Childhood Generalist; and4 WHEREAS, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science5 Teaching recognizes outstanding individual achievement in classroom instruction in these6 disciplines and exemplifies the highest national honor bestowed on educators for teaching7 excellence; and8 WHEREAS, the award is administered through the National Science Foundation, an9 independent federal agency, that supports all manner of educational research within the10 realm of science, mathematics, and computer science studies; and11 WHEREAS, the Presidential Awards program issues a ten thousand dollar grant to12 each recipient as an expression of how much her educational contributions are valued and13 appreciated; and14 WHEREAS, during the first week of March 2014, Mrs. Lamonte attended a15 week-long conference in Washington, D.C., that afforded her the opportunity to network16 with other award-winning teachers and to compare instructional techniques and curricula17 options that make mathematics more relevant to today's students; and18 WHEREAS, upon the citation President Obama commended her "for embodying19 excellence in teaching, for devotion to the learning needs of the students, and upholding the20 high standards that exemplify American education at its finest".21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby22 commend and congratulate Donna Lamonte on her receipt of the Presidential Award for23 Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby25 recognize her contributions to further mathematics education and the teaching profession.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to27 Donna Lamonte.28 SCR NO. 56 SLS 14RS-1790 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Suzi Montague.
