Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 59 BY SENATOR DONAHUE AND REPRESENTATI VE TIM BURNS A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend and congratulate Amanda Warren of Mandeville upon receipt of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and to recognize her many contributions to education and the teaching profession. WHEREAS, Amanda Warren, a fourth grade teacher at Lake Harbor Middle School, was among one hundred eight elementary school educators nationally selected for this prestigious award; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Warren believes that her primary responsibility as an educator is to be the best teacher she can be for every student at every opportunity; and she feels an obligation to inspire, encourage, and challenge her students to develop a lifelong interest in scientific knowledge and principles; and WHEREAS, she has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions that include Louisiana Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013, Lake Harbor Middle School Teacher of the Year, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Educator of Distinction, St. Tammany Parish Middle School Teacher of the Year, American Legion Educator of the Year, and the Saints/Chevron Teacher of the Week, along with receipt of technology grants from Donors Choose and the Kelly Gene Cook Foundation; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Warren is actively involved in the scholastic and extracurricular environments at Lake Harbor Middle School, serving as yearbook editor, Student Council sponsor, Positive Behavior Support team member, technology mentor, and grade-level chairperson; and WHEREAS, within the St. Tammany Parish School District, Amanda Warren is a curriculum writer and mentor for the new teacher induction program; and WHEREAS, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Louisiana State University and a Master of Education degree from Northwestern State University; she is certified in the elementary grades curriculum; and SCR NO. 59 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching recognizes outstanding individual achievement in classroom instruction in these disciplines and exemplifies the highest national honor bestowed on educators for teaching excellence; and WHEREAS, the award is administered through the National Science Foundation, an independent federal agency that supports all manner of educational research within the realm of science, mathematics, and computer science studies; and WHEREAS, the Presidential Awards program issues a ten thousand dollar grant to each recipient as an expression of how much her educational contributions are valued and appreciated; and WHEREAS, during the first week of March 2014, Mrs. Warren attended a week-long conference in Washington, D.C., that afforded her the opportunity to network with other award-winning teachers and to compare instructional techniques and curricula options that make science more relevant to today's students; and WHEREAS, Amanda Warren was reared in a family of educators and is a second- generation award winner, in that her mother, Kim Wood, won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 1995; and WHEREAS, upon the citation from President Obama is this commendation, "For embodying excellence in teaching, for devotion to the learning needs of the students, and upholding the high standards that exemplify American education at its finest". THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Amanda Warren on her receipt of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize her many contributions to further science education and the teaching profession.
