SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 80
BY SENATOR BROOME 
LEGIS POWERS/FUNCTIONS.  Recognizes Tuesday, April 29, 2014, as Susan G. Komen
Day at the legislature and commends Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana
affiliates for its efforts in the fight against breast cancer.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana Affiliates for its work to2
increase life expectancy and the improvement in the quality of life in local3
communities through the delivery of breast cancer education, screening, treatment,4
and research, and to recognize April 29, 2014, as Susan G. Komen Day at the5
Louisiana Legislature.6
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen is the world's largest grassroots network of breast7
cancer survivors and advocates fighting together to save lives, empower people, ensure8
quality care for all, and energize science to find cures for cancer; and9
WHEREAS, except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed10
cancer among women in the United States; and11
WHEREAS, among the fifty states, Louisiana is among the states with the highest12
rate of breast cancer mortality, despite the fact that the breast cancer incidence rate in13
Louisiana is lower than the national average; and 14
WHEREAS, in Louisiana this year, an estimated three thousand six hundred thirty15
new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women, and six hundred fifty Louisiana16
women will die of the disease, many of them facing a late-stage diagnosis involving fewer17
treatment options and lower chances of survival; and18 SCR NO. 80

WHEREAS, Louisiana has the fifth highest uninsured rate in the United States and,1
as a consequence, many women often face the decision of whether to delay or completely2
forego the breast cancer screenings that are a key to surviving this disease; and 3
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana Affiliates honor the4
mission to "save lives and end breast cancer forever" by advocating to preserve full state5
funding, and matching federal funding of the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program;6
and7
WHEREAS, full funding of the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program will8
continue to provide breast cancer early detection services to the aforementioned women; and9
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure continues its mission locally, nationally,10
and globally to identify the cures that will end breast cancer as a life-threatening disease and11
to provide community-based support to the women and men fighting breast cancer today,12
including those in this state.13
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby14
commend Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana affiliates for its unwavering15
dedication to the fight against breast cancer. 16
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby17
recognize Tuesday, April 29, 2014, as Susan G. Komen Day at the legislature.18
