SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 11
BY SENATOR PETERSON 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for 101 years of service
and recognizes Thursday, March 13, 2014, as the 13th annual "Red and White Day" at the
Louisiana Legislature.
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Thursday, March 13, 2014, as the thirtieth Annual Red and White Day at the2
Louisiana Legislature.3
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated,4
on one hundred and one years of service and outstanding achievements in the community,5
the state, and the world; and 6
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Social Action Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,7
Incorporated, would like to acknowledge the vision of Red and White Day at the Louisiana8
Legislature that began in 1985 and has resulted in Red and White Day growing from a9
Louisiana tradition to one observed by many of the sorority's, more than one thousand10
chapters throughout the country, and held annually at the Nation's Capital in Washington,11
D.C.; and12
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by13
twenty two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective14
strength to promote academic excellence; and 15
WHEREAS, they organized to provide scholarships and support to those in need, to16
educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, to17
highlight issues, and find solutions to problems in their communities; and18 SR NO. 11

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrates its centennial anniversary of1
exercising its collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance2
to the community; and3
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private,4
nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs5
in local communities and throughout the world; and6
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek letter7
sorority, a sisterhood of more than two hundred thousand predominately African-American8
college educated women; and 9
WHEREAS, it is comprised of over nine hundred chapters located in the United10
States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti,11
the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and12
WHEREAS, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority stand on the shoulders of13
giants, such as Senator Diana E. Bajoie, Representative Renee Gill Pratt, Representative14
Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, Representative Rosalind Peychaud, Representative Jalila15
Jefferson Bullock, Senator Cheryl Gray Evans, and Senator Karen Carter Peterson who have16
left an incredible imprint on this state's history; and17
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority uses its Five-Point Program Thrust of18
Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and19
Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement to20
uplift, encourage, and develop the global community; and21
WHEREAS, the organizational structure and governance of Delta Sigma Theta22
Sorority, is invested in the Grand Chapter, which meets at a national convention biennially,23
and regional conferences are held in the seven geographic regions of the organization during24
nonconvention years; and25
WHEREAS, the success of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's public service programs26
have depended upon their commitment to community service and academic achievement as27
well as their quest for excellence in all endeavors in their lives.28
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana29
does hereby recognize Thursday, March 13, 2014, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,30 SR NO. 11

Incorporated's Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature, does hereby commend the1
women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their exceptional achievements and2
manifold contributions, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation to the organization3
and its members for the tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their local4
communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.5
 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the6
president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to the7
regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.8
