SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 131

CONDOLENCES. Expresses condolences upon the passing of Reverend Willie Minor Jr.
A RESOLUTION1
To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the2
death of Reverend Willie Minor Jr.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the citizens of Louisiana4
and the members of the Louisiana Senate have learned of the death of Reverend Willie5
Minor Jr., on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the age of eighty-seven; and6
WHEREAS, Reverend Minor was a longtime native of Richland Parish, born on7
December 29, 1926, and lived in Rayville, Louisiana; and8
WHEREAS, Willie Minor Jr., served his country and his state in the United States9
Army; and10
WHEREAS, he received his bachelor's degree from Grambling State University,11
science and master's degree in education from Murray State in Kentucky; and12
WHEREAS, he was a dedicated educator in Louisiana, serving as a teacher,13
administrator, and assistant principal at Holly Ridge Schools in Richland Parish where he14
retired after twenty-five years of service; and15
WHEREAS, he began his ministry in 1975, following his attendance at the United16
Theological Seminary in Monroe, Louisiana; and17
WHEREAS, Reverend Minor began his ministry at the St. Paul Baptist Church in18 SR NO. 131

Rayville where he ministered throughout his career, and he also became the pastor of the1
New Morning Star Baptist Church in Bastrop where he ministered for twenty-eight years;2
and 3
WHEREAS, after thirty-seven and a half years of preaching and pastoring, when his4
health began to fail, Reverend Minor retired from the pulpits and continued his worship as5
a member of the Pleasant Grove #1 Baptist Church, Rayville, Louisiana; and 6
WHEREAS, he was a loving husband to Orleana Simmons and through their union7
he became the cherished father of their three daughters; Amanda, Shelia and Wilma and a8
devoted grandfather; he was also a dedicated relative whose love of family and friends were9
of the utmost importance in his life; and 10
WHEREAS, because of his numerous accomplishments in public and private life,11
the death of Reverend Willie Minor Jr. has left a void in his community and in our state and12
has created a genuine sense of profound sorrow in his friends and family; and13
WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,14
and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon people like the15
Reverend Willie Minor Jr., who dedicate their lives to serving others and making the world16
a better place for our future generations.17
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana18
acknowledges with gratitude the outstanding service and many accomplishments of19
Reverend Willie Minor Jr., and extends its sincere condolences to his family on the occasion20
of his death.21
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the22
family of Reverend Willie Minor Jr.23
