SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 143

COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Dean Baquet on being named executive editor of the
New York Times.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Dean Baquet on being named executive editor of the New York Times2
newspaper.3
WHEREAS, Dean Baquet, age fifty-seven, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, will4
become the first African-American executive editor at one of the nation's highest profile5
newspapers; and6
WHEREAS, Mr. Baquet is "a consummate journalist whose reputation as a fierce7
advocate for his reporters and editors is well deserved"; and8
WHEREAS, he is an enthusiastic supporter of the push towards further creativity in9
the approach of the digital expression of journalism; and 10
WHEREAS, he began his newspaper career in New Orleans at The States-Item and11
later worked for The Times-Picayune; and 12
WHEREAS, Mr. Baquet has been the managing editor for news at the New York13
Times since September 2011, and also served as editor of the Los Angeles Times; and14
WHEREAS, as a reporter at the Chicago Tribune, Baquet won the Pulitzer Prize for15
investigative journalism in 1988 for coverage of Chicago City Council corruption; and16
WHEREAS, Mr. Baquet made national headlines when he landed the Los Angeles17
position as the first African-American editor of a major newspaper.18 SR NO. 143

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana1
does hereby commend and congratulate Dean Baquet on being named executive editor of2
the New York Times.3
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dean4
Baquet.5
