SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 157
BY SENATOR BROOME 
CONDOLENCES. Expresses condolences upon the deaths of hundreds of miners as a result
of a coal mine explosion in the town of Soma in western Turkey.
A RESOLUTION1
To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the2
deaths of hundreds of miners who died as a result of a coal mine explosion in Soma,3
Turkey.4
WHEREAS, on Tuesday, May 14, 2014, an explosion tore through a coal mine in5
Soma, Turkey, as more than seven hundred workers prepared for a shift change, and the6
ensuing fire cut off electricity to the mine, trapping hundreds almost a mile beneath the7
surface; and8
WHEREAS, although three hundred eighty-three miners had been rescued by the day9
after the explosion, three hundred one deaths have been confirmed, making the Soma mine10
explosion the most deadly in Turkey's mining history; and11
WHEREAS, tragedies of this magnitude transcend geographical boundaries, and it12
is with great sadness for the loved ones of the deceased and injured miners that the Senate13
expresses sincere condolences.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana15
does hereby extend deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends of miners who died in the16
Soma, Turkey, explosion and does hereby share in the hopes that peace and comfort will be17
granted to those who remain.18 SR NO. 157
