SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 28

SENATE.  Designates April 1, 2014, as National Service Recognition Day.
A RESOLUTION1
To designate April 1, 2014, as National Service Recognition Day.2
WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character and central to3
how we meet our challenges; and4
WHEREAS, the nation's mayors are increasingly turning to national service and5
volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to meet their cities' needs; and6
WHEREAS, the Corporation for National and Community Service through its7
programs of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps addresses some of the most pressing challenges8
facing our cities and nation, from educating students for the jobs of the twenty-first century9
and supporting veterans and military families to preserving the environment and helping10
communities recover from natural disasters; and 11
WHEREAS, national service expands economic opportunities by creating more12
sustainable, resilient communities and providing education, career skills, and leadership13
abilities for those who serve; and 14
WHEREAS, national service participants serve in more than seventy thousand15
locations across the country, bolstering the civic, neighborhood, and faith-based16
organizations that are so vital to our economic and social well-being; and 17
WHEREAS, these participants increase the impact of the organizations they serve18 SR NO. 28

both through their direct service and by recruiting and managing millions of additional1
volunteers; and2
WHEREAS, national service represents a unique public-private partnership that3
invests in community solutions and leverages non-federal resources to strengthen4
communities and increase the return on taxpayer dollars; and5
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers demonstrate6
commitment, dedication, and patriotism by making an intensive commitment to service, a7
commitment that remains with them in their future endeavors; and 8
WHEREAS, the Corporation for National and Community Service shares a priority9
with mayors nationwide to engage citizens, improve lives, and strengthen communities and10
is joining with mayors across the country to support the Mayors Day of Recognition for11
National Service on April 1, 2014.12
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana13
designates April 1, 2014, as National Service Recognition Day and encourages residents to14
recognize the positive impact of national service day in our state.15
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to16
Mayor Jamie Mayo of Monroe, Louisiana.17
