SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 35
BY SENATOR CLAITOR 
A RESOLUTION
To commend and congratulate Paxton Turner, a junior at Louisiana State University in
Baton Rouge, on being named a Goldwater Scholar.
WHEREAS, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his
country for fifty-six years as a soldier and statesman, including thirty years of service in the
United States Senate; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the program is to provide a continuing source of highly
qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college
students who intend to pursue careers in these fields; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and
Excellence in Education Foundation awarded two hundred eighty scholarships for the
2014-2015 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States;
and
WHEREAS, Goldwater Scholarships are widely considered one of the most
prestigious undergraduate awards available to students of the sciences; and
WHEREAS, recipients of the Goldwater Scholarships were selected on the basis of
academic merit from a field of one thousand one hundred seven mathematics, science, and
engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities
nationwide; and
WHEREAS, Paxton Turner is one of two LSU students recognized by the Goldwater
Foundation and awarded the prestigious, nationally competitive Goldwater Scholarship by
the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program; and
WHEREAS, he is a member of the LSU Honors College and has been recognized for
his outstanding scholastic achievements in science, math and engineering; and SR NO. 35	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, Paxton is a junior pursuing a major in mathematics in the College of
Science who will graduate in 2015 and is currently researching an Honors Thesis on cluster
algebras with Milen Yakimov in LSU's Department of Mathematics; and
WHEREAS, he intends to pursue a PhD in pure mathematics and ultimately hopes
to conduct research in number theory and combinatorics and teach at the university level;
and 
WHEREAS, Paxton Turner merits the utmost respect for the exemplary strides he
has taken in his pursuit of academic excellence, and for the tremendous honor and pride that
he brings to his family, friends, community, and the state of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend and congratulate Paxton Turner on being named as a Goldwater
Scholar and being awarded a scholarship in the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence
in Education Program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Paxton Turner.
